Clone classic theme

Hi,

 

Using 1.7, I would like to clone the classic theme and branch this out into my own version. I keep finding during upgrades im losing changes and having to go through the process of re-doing them to the classic theme.

So... I have tried the following

 

1. Exported the classic theme in the  backoffice -> edited the theme.yml and zip name -> re-imported - This was successful but the theme is not available to select in the backoffice

2. Manually clones the classic folder -> edited the theme.yml - Again this was not available in the backoffice

3. Edited the shop table in the DB to change the theme - Broke the site until i reverted the change

I tried clearing the cache - This did not work

I checked the file permissions of the files and folders making sure the folders are 755 and files 644. I also checked the owner (im using linux) which is the same as the classic theme.

 

Does anyone have any way I can get the cloned theme to appear?
