Can the check out process layout be modified?

Client has referred me to this site because of the layout of their check out process: http://www.peruvianconnection.com/
If you select an item and proceed to check out, as a guest customer, complete step one for billing... it is from this page forward the client likes how this checkout process works. Not from the aesthetics per se, but how it is simply laid out, with the shipping options, gift, and up to step 3... I have set up and customised a template for their shop extensively (which is not going to be compatible with 1.4), and short of them deciding how they want to set up the shipping, they want THIS type of check out process. I'm nearly ready to go and find another 1.4 compatible template and start over, however it is the check out that we are hung up on now. She doesn't like the one page checkout module, however it was an improvement over the stock version. If anyone can direct me to a place where there might be a module to modify it, or even a couple of templates where the check out process is different, or even some guidance on how to modify the checkout, I would be ever so grateful! This has been a very involved process, but having put so much time into this project, would really, really hate to have to seek other ECommerce programs and start all over again. Thank you in advance for any guidance or suggestions any one can provide.

If you are using Paypal as payment method, I have Express Checkout module that does not require user input any information, only select country and carrier and do the payment. All customer information will be pulled over from Paypal after customer finished payment. It is quick and fast, and could reduce customer drop out during checkout process.

Thanks Angora, but I did do that already and short of the module posted by the user below, did not come up with a concise direction for information. I always google first. Many other posters on the PS board are and have also been looking for ways to modify the checkout layout... meeting with the client today. Thanks though - nice lmgtfy app!

Thank you VIP, I will be presenting this option, however doubt the client may go for it... we're looking for something that functions more like a GPR9 site than a local ecomm site. It may be a strong consideration short of outsourcing to a php coder. Thanks for the post.
