Customizable field that is a drop down

Is there a method to have a customized field in PS 1.3.1.x that instead of allowint the user to enter text it provides some options from which they can select, and then based on that it is combined with other attributes when placed in cart?

I can do this with the combinations generator but what could be a dozen or so attributes turns in to hundreds and I want to avoid admin on the hundreds

P.s. Have used Tomer's (presto-changeo) modules for this and they are great but do not fulfill our specific needs
