Problem with site hanging and writing multiple times to the database

I've recently installed prestashop (1.3.7.0) and the installation seemed OK, I did get an error message about the GD2 extenstion needing to be installed, but once I updated my PHP version to 5.3.5 that problem was resolved.

I then ran into a problem on the database setup page, I could verify that the database existed and the default email setup also worked OK but when I clicked to go to the next page nothing would happen - I needed to clear out the database several times until for some reason it eventually worked and I completed the install.

I'm now running into problems when I save changes to a created product where after pressing save it takes a couple minutes then returns a CGI error - looking at the products table in the database - when I hit save its creating around 100 duplicate products in the database.

I'm pressuming this is a setup problem rather than a bug, the server is a Windows Server 2003 running PHP 5.3.5 on IIS6.

Anyone got any ideas as to the problem and a proposed solution?
