Magento vs Prestashop - conversion rates

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am a web shop owner with 6 shops whereas 2 of them are with Prestashop and rest are with Magento.

I simply can not figger out which one i prefer most. Prestashop is fantastic to work with and fast working but Magento make your shop appear like Amazon.com but is slooooow to work with which can be a real killer productivity wise.

So I was thinking if anybody have conducted some marketing research on which shop system actually converts best on the customer front? That data would determine my choice of shop system.

What is your experience and point of viw - which system converts best?

You can have template made to look much better than the default and get a full width home page like alot of the magento themes. check out demos.echonetic.com/surfside to see what I am talking about. I have been asked a few times if that was magento. I definitely prefer presta for the features and ease of use. besides being much faster and less load on the server.

Well, It also depends on the hosting, Eventough I love prestashop in ease of use. Speed is not a sure thing. With the wrong hosting and settings Prestashop will Lag just as bad as magento. And Magento is all about fine tuning and performance servers. It will load even faster then prestashop.

The hosting is more expensive but if you need a robust, complex system and are willing to spend more time on your store you have an even bigger selection of themes/modules and community to back you up.

In short:
Magento: Hosting is key. Time and money essential. Supportive and Vast amount of Extensions
Prestashop: Hosting can be very slow on crappy server with the wrong settings/modules. Less time and money. Good starting point for entry level business.

Magento is S L O W. It has a very specific list of server requirements that have to be met, and even then it may not work 100%.Magento is a very complex solution for large shops that require good hardware base. Also, using Magento on a shared hosting environment can be VERY insecure as Magento likes to have things writable on the file system. If your hosting company does not have iron clad security another user on that system can make changes in those writeable areas.

Conversion rates have nothing to do with the software you use. It all depends on the customer experience. So good design, decent speed and a well-crafted checkout funnel are the keys.

At any rate, if you want to spend less, go with Prestashop, you need at least a vps to run magento smoothly (and its steeper learning curve is no incentive)
