[solved] Turning on Friendly URLs results in 404s and "link_rewrite.html" pages

Hello everyone,

Have followed the proscribed steps on how to turn on friendly URLs. Everything works OK from the root down to the category pages, but the category pages as well as widgets (like the "recently viewed" and "specials") all point to {product_id}-link_rewrite.html and result in 404 errors. For instance, a product with an id of 36 has a page name of 36-link_rewrite.html.

I have a clean .htaccess created by the generator. What else could I be doing wrong? I've posted contents of .htaccess below.

I am running version 1.3.6.0 of PS with a custom theme. I've switched back to the PS theme to no avail.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this? I have been beating my head against a wall for hours now....thanks in advance.

EDIT:
I solved this. It appears as if we had "link_rewrite" somehow in the product settings in the catalog. If I change it to something else, it will rewrite correctly. We're doing .csv product uploads, so we can alter this in the uploaded file in batch mode. I still wonder how it got there though....
