New category created but does not appear when I try to associate products to it

I have created a couple of new categories, and configured them - Modules - Top horizontal menu, all fine. They appear on the categories list, and on the menu, but when I try to associate a product with the new category, it's not there. 

Can anyone shed any light on this? I am using Prestashop 1.6.0.12

I have not used below 1.7.4.2 but I love troubleshooting! So in BO your adding a category and making sure its  live right? In 1.7 the  category will have a red X instead of a green Check if not live. We had this issue in 1.7 if the slider for active was not on. The category were able to be added to the menu but a menu click would produce no products. Not sure if this is applicable but.. .pictures help.

Try using lightshot or such to show us what your are seeing wrong.

Thank you for your message! The new categories are enabled, they are visible when I click on categories on BO and on the live website. But when go on a product and try to associate it with y new category, it is not visible.... I'm sure its something very basic, I've just no idea what!
