Extra menu on left side

I have a webshop with a top menu. I now want an extra menu, different from the top menu, on the left. How do I start?

Prestashop version ?

For PS 1.6. you can use blockmenu module. Simply activate it on back-office from module-list. For PS 1.7. I'm not sure if this is module is still available.

I'm using version 1.6 and don't find the block menu module in the list of the modules

In the top menu you will find the classic categories of our herbal store (herbs, spices, essential oil, ...)
I would like to make a menu in the left column with the applications of the herbs (digestion, respiration, ...) (but not on the homepage)

Yes I understood what you want. Sorry the correct name of module is: categories block. Try with the search option on module list page.

Thanks for your help selectshop.at, but we are not quite there yet. The new menu in the left column should contain other categories (i still have to make these) than the top menu. And there I get stuck. In other words, I want to create a second menu in the left column that is completely separate from the top menu to organize my products differently.

On the categories block you cannot add own/static links. Revert it. Use categories block module for left menu and the top menu for your other links. See sample here :
