Display of products on the category page : one single column or more columns ?

By default the products are displayed on one single cclumn.

Is there a way to display the items on two or three columns ?

the css file is at /themes/yourtheme/css/global.css
look for "product_list" keyword, all related css are here together

maybe you will also have to change theme file, which is located in
/themes/yourtheme/product-list.tpl

For your reference:
if you like the format at "home featured", which is listed in 4 columns by default, you can just just copy the code from /modules/homefeatured/homefeatured.tpl

See here for example, I use home featured list for category product list

I'm using this module:

But this one only displays one of the categories that you choose.

 

I'd like a module that you can add more columns and have one category (with products) in each column.

 

Would that be too hard for a novice php-html-css coder like me?

Could someone give me some tips on where to start? Or maybe someone is able to do it..
