majinkun180
Hi, I recently opened an online shop using prestashop and everything was going pretty smooth (3rd day open so far) until I get this error message "link to database cannot be established" pretty often. The thing is, I don't always get this error. The site works really smoothly for an hour or so then it randomly gives me the same "link to database cannot be established". Is this a hosting server side problem? Is my hosting just bad or is there something I can do?
pasko
Hi,In case, check the "settings.inc.php" under /prestashop/config/ to see if the dada base is correctly mentioned there.Regards.
majinkun180
Thanks for the fast reply Pasko, I will be checking that out. I'm also getting this error randomly when I'm trying to check out.<html><head><title>500 Internal Server Error</title></head><body> Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error ormisconfiguration and was unable to completeyour request. Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may havecaused the error. More information about this error may be availablein the server error log. </body></html>It sometimes lets me checkout but sometimes it comes up with this. tomerg3
The database error indicates that PS cannot access the database, unless you changed something in the settings file, it most likely means that your database went down (contacting your host should get it fixed). The random error 500 can be caused by memory issues, you can see more about it at http://www.presto-changeo.com/content/13-fixing-error-500Since it's random, you may want to check the error log and find out the exact error. majinkun180
Thanks guys. I believe it is because my website is on a shared server and the PS cannot access the database when my website is using too much of the shared resources. thats what I get for getting a shared server. I had no idea it's that bad. Time to move it to a dedicated server next.
tomerg3
You can move to a VPS (it's a mix between a dedicated and shared), I moved a few months ago to one since my site was more and more traffic, and other people were abusing the shared server which left me with very little resources.I went with a company called inmotion, and I must say, I am extremely happy with they server and service, they have a very helpful 24/7 live support (I never had to wait for anything). The server is very very fast and so is the connection. You can use this link https://secure1.inmotionhosting.com/cgi-bin/gby/clickthru.cgi?id=tomerg3 (I am an affiliate)
3rtt
Thanks for the fast reply Pasko, I will be checking that out. I'm having the same set of issues you have, both with the link to database error message, and the Internal Server Error message, and guess what...I'm also using Netfirms as my web host. I think it is either an issue with shared server, or a bandwidth issue at Netfirms. Either way, I'm just about to the point that I'm ready to look elsewhere for hosting, because it appears Netfirms doesn't have the resources necessary to handle all their traffic, or something to that effect. I'm not paying good money for hosting to have a web store that can't be accessed when customers need to access it.
majinkun180
Thanks for the advice tomerg3, I will look into that company when I look to change servers. Beginner, yes if I had the choice of changing service I would too but unfortunately we just opened our site on January 1st this year so I don't have the option yet. Maybe if the traffic picks up a little bit more I can get the site moved to a vps or a dedicated server. Netfirms does seem pretty slow all around and I wish I would have done my homework before, now it's gonna take alot more $$ and time to move the website to another server. My web creator did suggest using Mediatemple and after doing so much research I've found that without a doubt they are a great company. You should take a look at them too.

Which problem? If you mean connection to the DB cannot be established, then no, you should check you DB settings in /config/settings.inc.php and check with your host that the DB is up and running. mecollectibles
Yes, the database is not connected problem.Whatever I do the same problem continues. I do not understand why but I think my database has not problem but every time I need to refresh the pages & still the problem continues. What part of that file might be the problem as the sections I know are all good.I do not think the problem is with my server hosting as I have other websites in the same server but they are working well. What do you think I should do? tomerg3
Did you check the settings file? make sure that it has the correct DB info.If you are sure it's correct, then check with your host.As far as I know, it has to be one of these 2.
mecollectibles
Yes, I checked the file, I think the problem raised as I went & changed the back office password for the admin but now that I have made all the passwords to the original, I see again the same problem. The other point that is the hosting, I read the following for my mother website that include 5-6 websites but just this one has problems:Service StatusService Details StatusFTP Server up up Tomcat JSP Server up up failed SpamAssasin Server up up up System Service up PostgreSQL up Web Server up Mail Server (SMTP) up Mail Server (IMAP) up Mail Server (POP) up Mail Server (SMTP) up MySQL Server up Should I ask my host another information than above?
