SMTP still broken in 1.3.3.0 ?

Hi,
I tried to use the smtp option of PP, especially with gmail; but there is no way to get it working
I followd this thread http://www.prestashop.com/forums/viewthread/65956/configuring___using_prestashop/smtp_problem_gmail but it wont work for. Also tried a bunch other things,to no avail.
So,i am asking myself if the smtp option is totally broken ? Anyway to get it work ?
Or i am wasting my time ? i cant use the php mail function on my server, and i am using exim,not sendmail.
Any help would really be appreciated , i am hitting a wall here

Putting this here so it may help others with the same issue.
I wasn't able at all to get the PP smtp future to work,so i took another way and just reconfigured Exim.
If you are running exim on your server,just configure it to use remote smtp like explained in this tutorial:

works like a charm

another way around the problem may be something like this :
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/ssmtp
http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/132006
http://linux.die.net/man/8/ssmtp
but it has its caveats,need to dig further into it
