IS there a limit to the number of products we can put in one category?

IS there a limit to the number of products we can put in one category?

when I have a few hundred items in a category the items load fine, but when I put all 3,000+ items in the category now I can add the product to the cart by using a "add to cart" button, but I can't load any product info and the pages don't load when you click on the page.

I can move it to another category that has fewer items and it will work just fine, so I'm wondering if there is a product count limit.

If it matters I am using version 1.3.2.3
