simpson7647
im looking to upgrade but it seems ALOT of trouble.I heard you have to copy ALL the modifications yuou make from the old to the new version which can apparently take hours. Is this true and how long is it likely to take?thanks
rocky
That's true. It took me a few hours to update my website to PrestaShop v1.3.3. PrestaShop v1.4 improves this by letting you override files instead of modifying them. If you do that instead of modifying files, which I plan to do with my new website, upgrading in the future will be easy.
simpson7647
but if you override, wont all the modifications and all be deleted?thanks
rocky
Yes, if you overwrite files. PrestaShop v1.4 lets you override (not overwrite) files, so you have a separate file that adds extra code to the existing code.
simpson7647
oo so theres no overwriting on 1.4, but what about the earlier versions?thanks
rocky
Yes, assuming you have overridden all your files instead of modifying them. In earlier PrestaShop versions, there was no way to override these files, so you must modify files. That's what makes it hard to upgrade them to the latest version, since you must keep a log of all your modifications and do them again after upgrading.I'm sure many people will continue to modify files even after PrestaShop v1.4, since they won't be aware of the override option or they won't want to go through the extra trouble to override the files. I will write a guide on my website of how to do it when I have time.

SystemOAD
I dont understand what you mean by override the files instead of modify em?!All the changes I have done to my site are;add logo, edit text and image on the home pageand add my products ofc...What files do I need to keep when upgrading to 1.3.2? Or do I just need to take a copy of my text/images and re-edit them again once I have done the upgrade? Also I take it I will not lose anything from the database such as past orders and users etc etc? rocky
You only need to keep the files you changed. If you haven't changed any, then upgrading will be easy for you, since you can simply overwrite all your files with the latest PrestaShop version and won't have to worry about losing changes you made.Overriding files is something you can do in PrestaShop v1.4 to make changes to files in a way so that you don't have to worry about overwriting them and losing the changes when you upgrade to later versions. SystemOAD
I tried to upgrade before, and lost all text and logo on my home page though Is this stored in the database or something? And where do I add it back to the site once I done the upgrade? Also can I upgrade straight from 1.2.5.0 to 1.4 now? or do I need to upgrade to v1.3.
rocky
If it is a live site, you should upgrade to PrestaShop v1.3.3. PrestaShop v1.4 is currently in alpha stages, so it is for testing only. The logo is img/logo.jpg and the homepage text is modules/editorial/editorial.xml (in PrestaShop v1.3 and below). Make sure you don't overwrite those files. Actually, I think you should only overwrite img/admin and img/t. If you upload any of the other img subdirectories, you will probably be overwriting images you changed.
