Looking to upgrade version, but before i try to upgrade, what can i do to make sure i dont lose everything

hi all, im looking to upgrade versions but so far are still at version 1.3.1 as i have yet to upgrade at all.
Im worried all my work to my website may be lost if i try to upgrade so after some help

Before i try to upgrade what do i need to do to make sure my website remains the same.

I am hosted by hostgator so i can backup my website there.

I can also upgrade my website at the prestashop back office.

Is this all i need to do??

And are there any guides i can follow of how to upgrade my version?

First, you have to backup everything, entire site from your FTP + entire database from your phpmyadmin access.
Then you have to follow this guide : http://www.prestashop.com/wiki/Installing_And_Updating_PrestaShop_Software/#Update_PrestaShop

Before that, if you can't remember what you have changed between your version and the original one, you can list and backup your modifications using my "diff" module (see in signature). After upgrade, you will just have to past them in the new files !

Then, done !

I am sorry, but how do you backp up your database in PHPMYADMIN, just doing an export in SQL? Could you tell us what the exact correct options are?

I know something, but want to be sure I can restore later.

I don't know, I will try because I am having some problems with traslations...

There must be some error in this tutorial, or I am doing something wrong...

naturally, when I use the back up file, it tells me that database exists...so then, noothing is done...

MySQL ha dicho:

#1007 - Can't create database 'compraun_prestashop'; database exists

Unfortunately there's not a spanish version.

The BACKUP process will not tell you that the database already exists... it looks like you are trying to create a DB which is already there... please review your procedure.
