Pursuant
Will this application always be free, or are you using people as free beta testers? It seems that something this well made will not stay free for long....
DrÿSs'
Do you know what open-source means ?
James
I had this very same question recently with a staff member. They have there house in order, and Prestashop will always be free and open source.
Pursuant
I know what open source means, but the Prestashop team could very easily say "versions above 1.0 will cost $xxx". I was just making sure that Prestashop would be around and free in the future. My question is this: how can they afford this?! ;D
James
The way it was described to me, they have contracts to fufil. They will do custom work to add extra features/different ways of doing things and customisation to offer taylor made instalations of prestashop to paying customers. However the open source Prestashop that we are using now, and in future versions will remain open source, and if you dont mind doing the work yourself then you are free to do so. itsmeka
i think if Prestashop will in open source, then it will grow more and more. tnx
HalfMoon
It seems to me that more and more open source projects are able to fund themselves through custom work and support packages (eg MODX) and as long as this keeps the projects open source then this makes sense for all concerned. ;D
Peter Wilson
Hi guys, Just for the record: PrestaShop is a free and Open-Source, and it will remain free and Open-Source. We will not start charging money for version 1.0, nor will we be offering a "basic" solution for free and a "pro" (more advanced) solution for money. Our revenue comes from a variety of sources including the sale of customization services, hosting, and advanced modules and functionality needed by a small number of users. We believe in the Open-Source software model because we believe it is the future of business software, and also because we enjoy the idea of liberating e-Commerce from the unnecessarily expensive solutions that still dominate the market. For an articulate defense of the open-source business model, be sure check out JT Smith's article, Open Source vs. Business, in CIO Magazine.
