Add the alt tag to the image of the category, how to manage the alt tag depending on the site languages

Hi, 

the theme I use in the PS 1.6 doesn't use alt tag to the image of the category. The code is empty, more precisely it was:
alt = "category image".
Looking online, I managed to solve this solution so, it works, as long as the language of the site is the default one.

Here the code:

alt = "{$ category-> meta_title | escape: 'htmlall': 'UTF-8'}"

the content of the alt tag is get from "meta title" content field on the category BO page.
I'm not a programmer, how can manage this field on a multilingual site?
