how do i create my own favicon?

hi all, im looking to create my own favicon and started by looking in paint.net
It says it has to end in .ico but looking in what i can save paint.net as, there is no .ico

So how do i go about doing this :/

I don't think Paint.NET has the option to save as an icon. I use IcoFX to create icons.
