Abnormally Long Page Loads : Smarty Template Problem?

Hi All

I have two Prestashop sites, both were running fine on Friday evening.
I checked one site this morning and it took 3 minutes for the home page to open after some time-outs.

I emailed my hosting support and they said:
"I've managed to narrow it down further to the smarty template system that is causing the issues, but why it would suddenly become an issue is a mystery to me. No changes were made to any servers overnight."

I was concerned there may have been an attempt to hack the site but the second site is displaying the same issues and it seems odd that both have been hit.

I asked them to rebuild the site from last nights backup which they did, but it didn't resolve the issue.

I looked at my index.php and .htaccess files to see if I could spot anything unusual and replace them from a backup.
Anything else I should be looking at relevant to smarty templates?

I'd be grateful for any suggestions as my sites are currently virtually useless.

Just an update on this peculiar event
The problem continued through Saturday.
My hosting company put a couple of test html files on both sites and said they were sure there were no issues at their end and that the problem was specific to Prestashop.

I got up early Sunday morning to start rebuilding the sites.
Fortunately I tried browsing the sites again and they were both working as normal!

I asked my hosting company if they had made any changes to my environment.
They said they hadn't and again stated the issue was specific to Prestashop.

This greatly concerns me as I don't know what caused the issue and I want to make sure it doesn't happen again.

How can it possibly happen that two separate sites on the same server are almost completely disfunctional and then start working again, with no changes having been made?

I was going to mark this thread solved but it really isn't.

Hopefully someone can supply some feedback that may help others who could experience this issue.

Turn of smarty compiling
$smarty->force_compile = false;

in the filesmarty.config.inc.php in the config folder

After this issue going away without me doing anything, it has returned overnight.
Same two sites on the same server and my hosting company still says the problem lies with Pretashop

I'm not sure about the advice (above) about switching off smarty compiling as my understanding is that this is what renders the dynamic pages.
So if I turn it off I'm guessing nothing will work? (can anyone confirm)

Also would be good to know if there is anybody reading this who is also on one of VentraIP's RS3NODE2.MEL shared server and if they are experiencing similar issues?
