Searching products by attribute

Id like to add a new query to the search page. I would like the query to output through the methods that the search page already uses. Id like the query to search all relevant tables that the current search does.. ie if the product is enabled for sell, if stock management is in use that there are items in stock to sell.. those types of things..

in one particular instance, the query would be initiated from a form on the home page with images of different colors. selecting red will display all products with a attribute of the color red.

iv found in classes/search.php having code im looking towards but i am not able to find out what to do.
