Help with SSL from hostgator

Recommended Posts

hi all, after talking to my host, hostgator, ive been told as i am registered as a business account, i can receive free SSL certificate which i thought sounded great.

But it seems a little complicated as i dont know anything about coding etc,

I signed up with the forms and was told this:

Then you'll want to just make sure your site is securely coded, and then have the domain use https:// instead which is easy to set up as well.:

But i have no idea of how to make sure my website is securely coded as i know nothing about coding etc and nothing about how to change it from http:// to https://

All rather confusing, so anyone have any suggestions?

Apparently ill also have to add the certificate icon to my site which i dont really know how to do.

sorry and thanks all

regards

ryan

(05:02:43 PM) ryan: ive been told that im going to need SSL certificate set up with my website in order to use a certain paypal feature but how do i do this, what advantages are there and how much does it cost?
(05:03:47 PM) Chris Br: The advantage to this is the security of the payment information that is sent through your site. The SSL is an excellent means of protecting customers payment information, as well as reassuring them when they use your links.

(05:07:43 PM) ryan: thanks for the reply
(05:08:15 PM) ryan: i only need it for uk customers if thats any easier
(05:09:08 PM) ryan: how will i add it to my site as i currently use prestashop
(05:10:29 PM) Chris Br: You'll request the SSL be installed on the specific domain your prestashop installation is on.
(05:10:59 PM) ryan: oh okay
(05:11:10 PM) ryan: so how much is this SSL certifcate going to cost me??
(05:12:42 PM) Chris Br: We offer a $50 anda $150 Comodo SSL
(05:13:08 PM) Chris Br: However, a Business account gets a free private SSL, what type of package do you currently have with us?
(05:13:27 PM) ryan: Just a normal. it isnt a business acc
(05:14:08 PM) Chris Br: May I please have the primary domain on your account?
(05:14:22 PM) ryan: sure its www.protectandenhance.co.uk
(05:15:00 PM) Chris Br: Actually according to your billing profile, you do have a Business account.
(05:15:09 PM) ryan: oh do i
(05:15:25 PM) ryan: ill check
(05:15:28 PM) ryan: where can i view this
(05:16:02 PM) ryan: oh yeah
(05:16:06 PM) ryan: i do have a business package
(05:16:33 PM) Chris Br: Well then you get a free SSL with this account.
(05:16:39 PM) ryan: great :)
(05:16:58 PM) Chris Br: Let me get you the information on that.
(05:17:04 PM) ryan: thank you
(05:18:52 PM) Chris Br: https://secure.hostgator.com/free-ssl.php
(05:19:01 PM) Chris Br: Just fill out that form and that'll get things started.
(05:19:21 PM) ryan: Okay thankyou, ill do that right now :)
(05:21:08 PM) Chris Br: Great, Was there anything else I can help you with Ryan?
(05:21:51 PM) ryan: aww cant remember my password as it saves it haah
(05:22:30 PM) ryan: once ive completed this form, what will happen?
(05:24:17 PM) Chris Br: Then you'll be invoiced for the $10 dollar installation fee, and then an administrator will install the SSL as well as assign the dedicated IP address that comes with the SSL, as every SSL requires a dedicated IP address.
(05:24:38 PM) ryan: so it will cost me 10$?
(05:24:50 PM) Chris Br: I'm sorry, no fee.
(05:24:57 PM) Chris Br: We just install the SSL and change the IP.
(05:25:05 PM) ryan: oh right, so what do ii have to do?
(05:25:13 PM) ryan: as i dont know too much about websites at all?
(05:26:11 PM) Chris Br: That changes how your information is transmitted, to a secure link. Instead of http:// you'll be using https://
(05:27:32 PM) ryan: oh right, so all information is secure so obviously people will trust my site ,mor
(05:28:58 PM) Chris Br: Exactly
(05:29:08 PM) ryan: brilliant, so now what do i have to do?
(05:29:15 PM) ryan: is there anything ill have to do on my website or what?
(05:30:02 PM) Chris Br: I do recommend going through your coding for the page, and if they of your links in the code call for http:// you'll want to go through and change them to https://
(05:30:16 PM) Chris Br: Otherwise it will tell you all of your data is not secure, which is misleading.
(05:30:39 PM) ryan: i'm not sure what that means in all honistly
(05:31:18 PM) ryan: coding for which page do you mean?
(05:32:08 PM) Chris Br: Your website you'll have running on the domain you install the SSL on, if you have a site already.
(05:32:20 PM) ryan: yes the site is in production
(05:32:31 PM) ryan: And what will show up on my website to prove this certificate?
(05:35:03 PM) Chris Br: There will be seals you can incorporate to let them know they are on a secure connection, and as well as be able to view your certificate information as well.
(05:35:37 PM) ryan: thank you, where will this information be shown?
(05:35:46 PM) ryan: will it be added to my website, or will i have to add it or?
(05:37:49 PM) Chris Br: No you'll actually have to add the seal there yourself. We offer them here, http://support.hostgator.com/articles/hosting-tools/ssl-certificates/do-you-have-a-seal-i-can-place-on-my-site
(05:38:32 PM) ryan: o and i can get the $50 one for free
(05:39:18 PM) Chris Br: Yes that is the SSL you get for free with the Business account.
(05:39:57 PM) ryan: great
(05:40:07 PM) ryan: so what have i got to do now?
(05:41:27 PM) Chris Br: Just fill out the form and then wait for the response from the admin who will be installing that SSL.
(05:41:46 PM) ryan: ive filled out the form so okay, ill wait for the response
(05:43:28 PM) ryan: once theyve responded, what will i have to do then?
(05:45:11 PM) Chris Br: Then you'll want to just make sure your site is securely coded, and then h

Little follow on from the above:

(05:45:11 PM) Chris Br: Then you'll want to just make sure your site is securely coded, and then have the domain use https:// instead which is easy to set up as well.
(05:45:43 PM) ryan: i dont know anything about coding a website though if im honist, as i created the website though help from friends and prestashop
(05:52:11 PM) Chris Br: If you have help you can forward this chat in an email to your self and they can assist you. It is quite easy to do.
(05:52:36 PM) ryan: sure, ill keep a record of this email i think
(05:53:27 PM) Chris Br: Ok great, you can do that by selecting Rate and Close when you are done here. You'll be offered an opportunity to send this to your email.
(05:54:12 PM) ryan: okay thankyou for all your help
(05:54:18 PM) ryan: and ive simply got to wait for an email?
(05:55:15 PM) Chris Br: Yep that'll be all.
(05:56:17 PM) ryan: okay thanks for all your help, much appreciated
(05:56:37 PM) Chris Br: You're most welcome Ryan.
(05:56:38 PM) Chris Br: Was there anything else I can help you with?
(05:57:27 PM) ryan: that is all for now, thankyou :)

Out of the box, Prestashop will dynamically change the required pages to use https instead of http, not every page will be changed, that would slow your site down as every piece of information would have to be encrypted before it is sent to your browser.

But, theres always a but isnt there, any custom modules or html that you have added will need to be called from a secure page ie another page that uses https
