Import/Export Excel data

Recommended Posts

SOLVED**********************************

Ok, before I have used Miva for commerce sites, but now I've learned about Presta. But my problem is I have a very large database in excel that needs to be imported into Presta. Now I know you can do this, in fact test runs went well. BUT now that I'm actually trying to import the large database I've either gone blind or I'm missing something.

Problem1:
When I create say a CVS file, there are "Quotes" around a lot of the text. Anybody know why this is, I assume it's cell formatting because I know in the past I got around it?

Problem2:
If I Save As and save as a say a CVS, that doesn't work because in the description I have ,commas, being used. Is there a way to correctly export the data from the excel sheet that will work with the Import feature in Presta? I NEED to have these characters: , : " <> []
*****************************************
Unsolved:
Is there a way to export the database, or a module to install that will allow for this?

P.S. Using office 2010

Hello joeyd-slo,
I've know about Prestashop for a while but just started to implement it over the last 3 days. Its been a learning experience and this is why it took me a while to move from Joomla based Virtuemart.
Import feature is great in Presta, but probably requires some mastering. Dont know about export - I dont think there is a built-in option, and you have to get a third party addon.

Okay for your situation, it sounds like it has something to do with the file you have, rather than import feature. If you can save a .CSV thats great. In this case make sure your columns in excel are well defined and separated without extra characters. If you are importing the data from another database or feed into excel, be sure to define how you want it to be fed into the spreadsheet before exporting a CSV file.

If you already have a .TXT file that is delimited with the desired characters (">" "|" "^"...etc) you can actually use this directly at the Presta Import.

I have to do over 12,000 products import so I just paste my "tab" delimited .TXT file into Excel, and then save a .CSV : During import, I define "," as the delimiting character and because images are linked URLs you have to put any character you like in the "Multiple value separator:" (I used "^") otherwise images will not link to external URLs.

Play around with you file a little and see if you get any where. Also post a image if you dont mind of the steps you are taking... maybe we'll find out whats what.

Good luck... we all need it.. I know I do!

ok, I got it to work, The other day i realized in Office 2010 there is more than one feature for saving csv.... problem solved. THEN it wouldn't import into the database, fixed that (it didn't like the ; in one of the cells).... THEN I ran into another problem (seems to be a trend here) when using excel 2000 I guess you can't have 'ID' in the first cell.... added a little ' to it. Problem solved!

SO last question if somebody has an answer;

- Is there a mod, or a way to export the product database to excel or similar?
