Techincal System E-Mail Config Questions

Hi there.
Can somebody tell me how is PS sending e-mails under PHP?. Is it using special classes like "phpMailer"?. I also want to know where can I find the specific code where the "send mail" function is to see more about it.
I'm asking this because I'm trying to create a kind of "Newsletter Mailer" using "phpMailer" but I can't send e-mails by SMTP with it under the same server. This is why I'm thinking that this info could be useful.
