Using 1.7.1.2 but want to buy a theme that's compatible with 1.6.1.18, is that a problem?

Hello,

I am very new to Prestashop. I'm helping a friend build his website. He wants to get theme that's compatible with 1.6 version but I installed the latest version of Prestashop to his website, that version being 1.7.1.2 . If I were to buy this theme would that be a problem? Do I have to install the Prestashop 1.6 in order for the theme to function properly. Thank you for your help.

1.7 themes are for 1.7 only, and 1.6 themes for 1.6 only, you can't use them across versions
