Prestashop Themeing General questions

Up until recently I have dealt only with theming wordpress, and prestashop appealed to me because it seemed to have a similar structure for theming. I know in wordpress you can assign custom templates to individual pages but you cannot in Prestashop.

Can you have multiple layouts? 1 column - 2 columns?
Is there a page with all the prestashop hooks?
Any good books on the topic?
Do I have to purchase modules for the functions I wish to accomplish such as client updateable slideshow?
If I have all of my HTML and CSS templates set up what is the best approach for integration.

Can I define a new layout 1-2 column vs prestashop's seemingly native 3.

In terms of theming specifics. Some products have a list of options, I wanted to add a learn more link next to these and open up a lightbox window or accordion slide on what a specific detail is. Can this be done?
