Friendly URLS

I'm trying to enable friendly urls but I keep getting an error here is what i am doing and when I get the error

1. create blank .htaccess file
2. chmod 666 .htaccess file
3. Enable friendly urls
4. click on generate .htaccess file in
that's when i get the internal server error and i am not able to show any page until i remove the .htaccess file

any help would be great

May be your Apache server does not support URL rewriting.

What is your host?
What does you .htaccess contain after the "generation"?

What happens if you dont change the permissions to 666 and leave them at 644?

if I leave permissions to 644 it does not find the file for me to generate .htaccess from the tool section in prestashop. The file is also empty after it generates the internal error message. I am a little lost.
