Customise the checkout step order

Hi, I've been looking everywhere to find a way to re-order the steps of the checkout. Currently when a customer clicks on the checkout button, they go directly to the login screen if they haven't already logged in, or they go to the address screen. I'd like the order of steps to change so that they go through the following order:

1) login
2) address
3) shipping
4) summary
5) payment

I've got no idea if this is hard or easy, but if possible I'd really like to make the change. Can anyone help? I know that a one page checkout resolves the issue, but for now at least, if possible, I'd like to change the order.

As you wrote, if customer is already logged in, summary step is completely skipped and checkout takes the customer to Address step directly. The summary should be the last item before actually confirming the order. What you ask is the logical order of the check out process should be.

Sadly, there is not a shortcut way to do that. Requires changes to core files and also may break any module not expecting changes. Place a request and post the address of the request here so anyone who agrees with it can go and add their voice.
