Huge cache folder

I have thousand products but nothing can explain 7GB cache folder. Seems that prestashop cache system keeps the old cache files when i make some changes in shop and the system remake the cache so its getting bigger and bigger.

Also i delete by mistake the index.php files from cache folders. What are those index.php files are for?

These index.php files serve only to prevent that people might see the content of a directory. So you can safely copy them from another directory. Of course not all index.php files are without real content but for example those in the image directories are.
