Homepage layout

Is there a way to have a totally different page layout on the homepage to the other pages?

At present the site has 3 columns with the various blocks to the left and right. I need to have the homepage display without the columns.

I personally think it's a silly thing to do and will confuse users, but my client thinks otherwise so who am I to argue?

I may need to mess about with either the PHP or smarty code, which I'm happy to do, but I just wondered whether there was an "official" way to do this before I start hacking away.
