[SOLVED] 404 Component Not found errors on every link in front end

I have just installed PrestaShop and it looks great. The problem I am having is that *every single* page, every link, every product comes up with a '404 Component Not Found' page.

I have modified my .htaccess as instructed and yet nothing shows up after I have done that and then clicked on some categories (ones that came with the installation, as well as ones I have created) and products. Still no pages show up on the 'pages not found' section in the back end admin interface.

I have also gone through and ensured that the folders specified have the correct permissions, and those that required recursive permissions be set, have been verified.

Not sure what to do about this fact that everything comes up as 404?

SOLUTION:
I had 'friendly url' turned on and had not seen that I had to have a separate .htaccess in the shop directory {I had modified the one in the root folder}. I followed the directions given in Tools > Generators (though you have to have friendly url turned on in order for it to write that part correctly) and voila!
