Generate thumbnails

I have a problem when generating thumbnails for my products.

If all of my pictures would have been in landscape then this would not be a problem. In that case I can set product image to i.e. 300x200 (w x h).

But when I have a portrait picture there will be a problem, I will then have a colour filled out on the sides of my pictures until it gets 300x200.

Is there a way to prevent the php in images.inc.php to not fill out my picture? I have found how to change the colour that is used to fill out but if I would like to add a border around the image on the product page the border will continue and be larger then the picture if it is in portrait mode.
