Display Sub Categories Only - As main categories are shown as static links across the top.

Hi,

In my design layout, the main Category links are hard coded in a horizontal menu across the top of my page - as there will only ever be 6 main Category areas.

So, when you click one of these, i only then want to show the Sub Categories (of this Main selected Category) in my left hand menu.

e.g. mian Cats: Timber, building, landscape.

You click Timber...

Down the left, you only then see the Sub Cats of Timber.

Is that possible to do?
Can anyone help point me in the right direction of how to get it to work?
