Get combination product display cover image plus combination image

I'm using PS 1.7.4.2 and don't know how have combination specific images that change when buyer chooses and have the cover image as a default prior to the choice.  Right now, I have to just include the product specific images without the cover image. ANyone suggest how I can present the customer with a color specific image plus have other thumbnail images accessible in the slider?

 

I used Prestashop last in 2009 in an early version and found there was more freely accessible information and assistance (and free plugins) available on this forum. Seems to have become much more geared towards enterprise and a much harder platform to bootstrap for smaller businesses. Things change I guess, it's not only specific to PS. I uses an earlier version of Magento a few years ago and now it seems one needs a consultant just to install it.
