Product positions duplicates in category

Hello everybody,

could you please help me with issue I found? I am desperate with that

PS version: 1.6.1.15

PS settings: Pagination and sorting products: Default sorting by position inside category, Ascending

I am importing products from my supplier each night. The problem is I sorted the products, and then with new imports new products are not positioned at the end of all products, but new products gets positions from beginning. So example:

In category are 333 products sorted by me. When new product is added/imported, it not get the position 334, but it get position 2. Next new product get position 3, and so on. So there are duplicates in positions and new products are positioned to the beginning instead of to the end of list as it should behave.

Can someone help me why this is happening? Why new products are not sorted at the end?

I read somewhere that it exist some product positon index, which can be broken? Unfortunately I cant found that topic again

Can you help where to look, what to check, or something? Shouldnt new product get the position number like: last position in category + 1?  What are PS mechanisms of this, so I can move further in this case?
