Using localhost as testing site

Hello,

I have a live site with the version 1.6.1.4 that i want update for the last 1.6 version. But because I want test if everything works fine after update I prefer clone my website for localhost, update here and after that update the live site. This will be also useful in the future because I want to do some customization and in this way I will have always work in a localhost.

Clone my website for the localhost I think I can do without any problem. But I want to know how I can update the changes that I do in localhost with the update and the future customization in the live server. There is a good way for do this?
