Multi-language site and many products

Browsing through the documentation I'm not certain exactly how the multilingual part works together with product listings, so I thought I'd ask here as you are the ones with experience and detailed knowledge of Prestashop!

 

We would want to list thousands of products (plus many variations) and each could have a different description.  How does this work in a multilingual site?  We couldn't edit each manually.

 

Our software generates title, description etc dynamically in several languages and we need to use these rather than an automatic translation.

Is there a way for example to upload product details in csv/xml/etc format and include multiple descriptions for the different languages or something similar?

 

Just a basic overview of how this works would help us see if Prestashop is suitable
