1.6 to 1.7 with clean install process

Hello,

We have a working shop on PS 1.6.1.16 (30k customers, 300 products). We are planning on increasing our product range and a change in the vision would be necessary. Bought a custom theme which would work on both 1.6 and 1.7 but since it will take us significant efforts and time applying it, I prefer to use it on a PS version with longer support expectancy. I have many questions:

1. Is PS 1.7 already usable for a production shop? Read a lot of bad reviews, still PS is no longer offering 1.6 side by side to 1.7 when go to downloads which makes me think it must be a working solution by now. Cant believe they will risk their business by offering a buggy non-working store, or would they?

2. Direct upgrade from 1.6 to 1.7 does not seem to work. Tried it several times from my development copy. So the question is - how do I upgrade?

3. If I fresh install PS 1.7, how do I import the orders, clients and products from the original site? How to switch between both, in order to keep all current product urls?

Any advise would be much appreciated. Thank you!

1) No.

2) You don't currently

3) There are modules that could help, there are also online servers that do cart to cart migrations of data

Honestly, stay on PS v1.6, there are no good business reasons to use PS v1.7 at this time, and PS v1.6 is not going away any time soon

Yes it's ready but only if your must have 3rd party modules have 1.7 version.

2. Direct upgrade from 1.6 to 1.7 does not seem to work. Tried it several times from my development copy. So the question is - how do I upgrade?  You can hire professionals or post here in forum about your upgrade issue.

3. If I fresh install PS 1.7, how do I import the orders, clients and products from the original site? How to switch between both, in order to keep all current product urls?  It would be terribly difficult for anyone to explain how to to a manual upgrade.  We have done 1.3/1.4/1.5 and 1.6 upgrades to 1.7 but have knowledge base to solve auto upgrade issues.

Any advise would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi my agency is doing 1.7 upgrades for clients whose 'must have' 3rd party modules have 1.7 counter parts.  I've provided more feedback above in red.  Note: my agency has done more upgrades including high quality theme than anyone on the planet so I've been watching 1.7 closely.  Read more here about our service.

After a few client upgrades we have a few learning but overall my team really enjoyed the experience.  Our upgrade business really took a  hit this last six months but now are recommending 1.7 as upgrade option for new and existing clients.

happy ps'ing, el
