Product filtering V1.7x

I don't have enough products on my website to warrant create lots of sub categories, so I just want one main category of pliers - then when a customer click on that category he'll see all the products for that category.

 

Once he's in this category (for example 'Pliers'), I want him to see filters on the left, so then he can select for example "Heavy Duty" ...and then only see heavy duty pliers...I thought this would be fairly simple, but having watched a few videos & read a few websites, I'm a bit puzzled (the videos I watched seem to relate to variations - for example wrt clothing)

 

So I gather I need to create a product attribute (which I've done - but I can'r see any obvious way of assigning that product attribute to a product in the edit product page?

 

What am I missing?
