Editing the category page

Hi all, here is my little question:

In my shop, the products are divided in 3 main categories. You access them by the top menu, as there is no side menu, until you click on a category.

Then inside each category there is many more categories. You see them only after clicking the top menu link.

I would like that when you click on the main category A, you see a picture for each subcategory and also see all the list on the left hand side menu. Because right now, it's showing only as a category with products in it.

I dont want products that are for sell, only i want to put on that page images and small text to introduce each subcategory. I understand i could do that by creating a new page from CMS, but i would lose the left hand list of all the categories and subcategories, which i dont want to lose.

Any advice would be great!

Because right now if you click on Category A you see 25 products in this category and the 25 products. But actually there is more then 25 products, about 1000, but you access them by clicking on the list. So i dont want my customer to be confused, i would like to make a new page just to introduce each subcategory but keeping the list.

Can you tell me how you created 3 main/parent categories outside of "Home" please?
I can only seem to create sub-categories from "Home" - looks stupid on the website.
I want a second main category for "Online Shop".
Is it possible that you could help me please?
