eru777
Hello everyone. I just upgraded my webhost from a local one in Greece to godaddy, in order to have a more free reign on my website. Is it doable to do an upgrade from 1.4 to 1.7 or should I just start over from scratch? I saw many people making threads about how it was very difficult and I'm kinda afraid to do it. They say if it ain't broken don't fix it but I wanna upgrade ^^ Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.
Guest
you can upgrade from 1.4 to 1.5 then 1.6... but stop here, better not get involved in 1.7 wich is a realy buggy versions , not usable in production yet and maybe never ^^ Good luck
eru777
Oh, I see. Is it that buggy? They advertise it a lot! I want to test upgrade it, are there any guides or how-to's for that? I was thinking if it was a regular site I'd just put it on a flash disk. But you can't do that with .php sites..

Yes the only thing that works good with 1.7 is the marketing, the team is big but the developpers who works for the Core code are so few.. have a look on glassdoor, it's frightening. Take some time to look into the forum, you'll find post about 1.7, 1.7.1, and what the community think about it.. but you won't find any answer from Presta Team that is no longer on this forum... maybe because almost no user comme here too.. Now for your upgrade... use a copy of your site and if you want to put it on a flash disk, why not ! But you need to have apache working on localhost, for that you can use Wamp or another package for local php/mysql. Have fun !
eru777
I looked at the reviews, wow! So bad.. Thanks for the tip. I will try doing that with the flash drive ^^ *fingers crossed*
Scully
I agree with not taking any 1.7. version for the moment. What the upgrade path concerns: It's a question of how large your current site is. If it seams feasable to make a new setup, it would go this approach. Even if the basics with upgrading might work there is still your theme which isn't up to date and you also have to chance of getting surprised by update problems. If you make a fresh install, you might not have this kind of troubles. Good luck!
