sam.r
Hello everyone, I'm a php dev and plan to start developing e-commerce stores. I chose PrestaShop as the platform (hope that was the right decision!). Should I start my learning (and development) with 1.6 or 1.7? Is 1.7 production ready and has the support of popular modules/themes being developed for 1.7? I think I'll probably develop my first store in a month or so. Would 1.6 be a safer approach for this year, or should I stop thinking about it and just learn and develop 1.7? Thanks. Looking forward to productive discussions in this community! Daresh
In my opinion, one of the best things in Prestashop is the ability to override core functionalities with modules. But this feature from version 1.7 is starting to get limited with intention to be completely removed. So go for 1.6, cause I think it should be in use for some time.
musicmaster
That's a no-brainer. The forum is full of complaints about 1.7 while 1.6 is quite stable. So go for 1.6.

But 1.6 is only supported till October 2018 (maintenance releases). That would be hard to pitch to a client considering upgrading to 1.7 would require major dev work all over again after a year. Simonas Invertus
Yes, there are complains about PS1.7, but if you are new you should look into the future and start with PS1.7 To be fair, I decide for each client individually. There are still some modules that exist only for PS1.

For example, look at WordPress. Version 4.0 was released in September 2014 but is still being supported via patches as late as 20th April 2017. https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Versions From time-to-time (5-7) years you should take into consideration to upgrage your software and server. Wow. I'm more like max 1.5 to 2 years. Edited April 24, 2017 by sam.r (see edit history)

See here:https://www.prestashop.com/forums/topic/458378-prestashop-security-release/ Prestashop 1.4 and 1.5. was not supported anymore, but security release was given.
