get colours from product's images and make them searchable, programmatically

Hello,

I worked for a fashion ecommerce where product's colour were unreliable, for many reasons we ended up with non accurate colours that leads some problems with customers. For example, a t-shirt listed as orange was indeed some red-ish.

The administration managed the situation by getting more accurate records from the warehouse, in other words, by hand.

I am a developer and I know there are some libraries for extract the colours from an image, and I was wondering, is this a common problem? Are there people struggling with colours in their ecommerce as well?
