How to change the length of the category description

Are you sure you edited the file in the correct theme folder?

Yes. I have two options the default theme and my theme. I changed it in my theme.

This is the part in the tpl file where you print your description:

<span id="category_description_short_h" class="rte">{$description_short}</span>

 

You are printing the short description.

Also you have a bigger problem that you entire description in inside H1 tag.
