How can i set a new array element in '$params' Array

Hi all,

The modules HOOK functions using a $prams array as a function parameters, like this

function hookLeftColumn($params)
   {
       global $smarty, $cookie;

               //codes goes here...

        }

my question is how can i set a new array element in this $params Array from a template.
