layered navigation does not filter

I have configured layered navigation.  The filter radio boxes appear but when I tick a box the results stay exactly the same (I would expect them to filter my results).

In other words in my "categories filter" i can see

 

tops(2)

dresses(5)

 

I would expect that when I tick "tops" I am shown only the two tops.  But when I do so , nothing happens.

Looks like no javascript is firing, try resetting the module
