Advice on Migration and Google Analytics

David C

Recommended Posts

I have been in preproduction for last few months with Prestashop.  I am finally getting ready for launch and leave my OLD ecommerce platform behind!  B)

I was wondering what other shop owners here have done with their Google Analytics migration.

Should I keep using the existing GA account and property?  Or is it better to start from scratch and use a new GA property?  My key URLs will be the same in Prestashop.  I will miss my old data if I start from scratch.  But using a new property will be easier for me to setup while I am still in prelaunch mode.

I would really love to hear what others have done, their experiences, and/or regrets.

Thanks,

David

Hi

My advice would be to continue with your existing Analytics data (account), this will enable you to compare your sites performance before and after the new site launch. Such things as conversion rates, bounce rates and average order value etc..

Without being able to compare data... how will you know if your store is now performing better or worse?

Also I would advise that you make sure to 301 redirect all old URL's from your old site to your new site, so not to loose any Google rankings for your existing site ,and this will also help in comparing data.

A great article here on 301 redirects and best practice: https://moz.com/blog/url-rewrites-and-301-redirects-how-does-it-all-work.

Hope this helps...
