Sub-category thumbnails not showing V1.6.1.6

This is seriously doing my head in! I cannot get the sub category thumbnails to show! I have cleared cache, disabled cache done everything yet they refuse to appear! Example page - http://new.oxala.co.uk/14-lighting-for-home-and-garden - candles has a thumbnail uploaded and I can see this in the admin section yet nothing on the page! I usually build my own shops but for once decided to try off of the shelf and it's proving to be a right mess. Nothing makes sense and the thumbnail issue seems to be a massive bug in an otherwise OK platform. Can someone please point me in the right direction because I am totally in the dark about what should be a very basic facility. When the category header is displayed I can see the thumbs but I don't want the header images as they look naff.

Please advise.... Frustrating!!!!!

That's not how it works, it is just supposed to display the cover image there, that thumbnail thing does not work sadly

Thank you - I have just uploaded cover images but to be honest it isn't the best way - such a simple thing yet they haven't seemed to fix it! Never mind... My only fear is having too many images as will slow an already pretty slow site down further! Thank you anyway.

but it is not a bug, there is nothing to fix

cover - appears as a cover of category

thumbnail - appears as a thumbnail for example in block top menu (you can find there images associated with categories - these images are thumbnails)
