Are there any free to use shipping modules that work?

I have wasted an entire day trying to configure the only free shipping module I have found -- FedEx. I had all of the general inputs completed. I was only given two options total out of all shipping methods at check out, and even if the product weight adjusted (significantly from 20lbs to 0.05lbs) it made zero difference (and I have it set to weight not price).  Right now my only "shipping" option is local pick up. I need to offer an alternative to actually ship, but I don't have the money to buy a module. It seems the only alternative is to try to guess the max a person would spend to ship an item and hope the price to ship to Alaska when they live in Colorado doesn't scare them off. Anyone have a solution?
