Electronic product, but delivered by email after customizing

Hi,

new user here :-)

I sell software that has to be customized for every client...so I have to create products as "downloadable" to get rid of the shipping-stuff, right?

But I can't add the downloadable file (and so I'm getting "missing file" notice) and the email sent to client has the download link that leads to nothing. So I could edit the email template to fix the email, but is there a way to do this better?
