Top Horizontal Menu Search storing search entry

Have noticed a recent issue with search block activated in top horizontal menu.

When you enter a search term it remains there in subsequent site visits.

I added a placeholder in the text entry box 'search' but this is now constantly replaced by any search term entered.

 

How can I prevent search box caching any previous entries?

Do clear cache folders.
Then check it new private browser.

lol so each customer will have to clear browser because of this ?

I was thinking smarty keeping it's search data in cookies?
