In general, we do not recommend upgrading a 1.6 to 1.7, since many things will not work as-is, starting with the theme. You should, however, create a test store with 1.7 and give us your feedback, see if your modules still work, or try to adapt your 1.6 theme to 1.7, for instance. Best regards.
